Parliament Hill Lido: Everything You Need to Know About Hampstead's Outdoor Pool

Parliament Hill Lido is London's finest outdoor pool, 60 metres, unheated, open year-round. Here's what to expect, how to get in, and the best time to go.

Parliament Hill Lido: Everything You Need to Know About Hampstead's Outdoor Pool

Parliament Hill Lido is one of the last remaining outdoor lidos in London that has survived the post-war era of closure and demolition. At 60 metres in length, unheated, and open every day of the year (including Christmas Day), it represents a particular strand of north London stoicism, the commitment to swimming in cold water regardless of air temperature or the calendar, that is not quite available anywhere else in the city.

The Basics

Location: Gordon House Road, Gospel Oak, NW5, at the Parliament Hill section of Hampstead Heath, next to the athletics track.

Size: 60 metres long by 27 metres wide. Six lanes.

Water temperature: Unheated. Water temperature tracks the season: around 5-8°C in January and February; 20-22°C in August. The lido does not heat its water, which is the point.

Opening hours: Open year-round, typically 7am to 7pm in summer; 7am to 12pm in winter (hours vary, check the City of London Corporation website before visiting in winter months).

Entry: Charged. Adults £3-4 (prices updated periodically). Entry by Swimtag system, you buy a Swimtag chip at reception and tap to enter the pool. Swimtags can be loaded with multiple visits. The first visit requires registration.

What It's Like

The lido has a specific atmosphere that pool regulars understand and first-timers occasionally find surprising. It is a functional outdoor pool: the changing rooms are basic, the poolside is concrete, and the experience is organised around swimming rather than sunbathing. The regular swimmers, many of whom have been coming here for decades, have the relaxed familiarity of people who meet at the same place at the same time every day and understand each other without requiring introduction.

The pool itself is well-maintained. The water is clear, the lanes are properly measured, and the depth at the deep end is sufficient for a decent dive (though check current rules, diving policies have varied). The 60-metre length rewards it as a training pool rather than a casual splash, serious swimmers use it for distance sessions, particularly in the early morning lanes from 7am to 8am.

In summer: The lido is genuinely excellent in warm weather, combining outdoor swimming with a setting that is indoors nowhere and outdoors everywhere. The pool gets busy on hot days between 11am and 3pm; the early morning session (7-9am) is never quiet but is manageable.

In winter: The lido in January is a self-selecting experience. The water temperature of 5-6°C means that people who are in the pool are there because they want to be in cold water, not because the temperature is bearable. The Christmas Day swim is a tradition with a loyal following; the Boxing Day and New Year's Day swims similarly.

The Wild Swimming Alternative

Parliament Hill Lido exists alongside the Heath's wild swimming ponds, the Men's Pond, the Ladies' Pond, and the seasonal Mixed Bathing Pond, which are a 15-minute walk away. The ponds offer open-water swimming in a natural setting, also unheated, with a different character: no lanes, no clock, natural light and wildlife around you.

The choice between the lido and the ponds depends on what you're after. For structured swimming, distance training, or an experience closer to a conventional pool, the lido. For a wilder experience in natural water, surrounded by vegetation rather than concrete, the ponds. Many swimmers use both. Full guide to the ponds: wild swimming Hampstead guide.

Getting There

By tube: Northern line to Hampstead, then a 20-minute walk across the Heath (the route is pleasant; take the path past the model boating pond). Alternatively, Overground to Gospel Oak, then 5 minutes' walk to Gordon House Road.

By bus: Several routes stop at Parliament Hill Fields on Gordon House Road.

Driving: There is a small pay-and-display car park on Gordon House Road adjacent to the Lido. It fills quickly on weekday mornings (the 7am opening brings a surge of early swimmers) and on summer weekends. Arrive before 7:15am if driving.

Practical Notes

Swimtag: The Swimtag system can be purchased online before you visit, worth doing if you plan multiple visits.

Changing rooms: Single-sex. Lockers available (bring a £1 coin or use the contactless system). The changing rooms are basic, this is an outdoor lido, not a leisure centre.

Bringing children: The lido is open to children accompanied by adults. The water depth varies across the pool; supervise young children in the deeper sections. The shallow end is suitable for less confident swimmers.

Regulars: The 7am session has a group of regulars who know each other and know the pool. First-time visitors are welcomed; there's no exclusivity, just the mild familiarity of a regular group.
