Education is one of the primary reasons families move to Hampstead — and one of the primary reasons they stay. Nurseries and Pre-Schools
Hampstead has a strong nursery sector covering ages two to five, with several well-regarded settings within walking distance of the village.
Hampstead Nursery School on Westbere Road is a state-maintained nursery school — one of the few remaining in London — offering 15 to 30 funded hours for three- and four-year-olds. Ofsted Outstanding. The school has an outdoor learning focus and benefits from its proximity to the Heath. Demand significantly exceeds places; register as early as possible, ideally by the child's first birthday.
New End Nursery, attached to New End Primary School, offers an integrated nursery for children aged three to four. Priority is given to children who will move into reception at New End. A reliable route into one of Hampstead's most popular state primaries.
Fitzjohn's Primary School Nursery operates similarly, offering funded hours for three- and four-year-olds with priority given to future Fitzjohn's reception pupils. The school runs a morning and afternoon session model; full-day wrap-around care is available through a separate provider on the premises.
For private nurseries, Bright Horizons Hampstead on Fitzjohn's Avenue offers full-day care from six weeks to five years. Little Gems Nursery on Flask Walk is smaller, independent, and has a strong local reputation. Both operate waitlists that can run to 12–18 months for the most popular age groups.

Hampstead Parochial CofE Primary School — Holly Bush Vale, NW3 6QT
The historical village school, established in 1840 and still occupying its original building on Holly Bush Vale. Two-form entry (approximately 60 places per year). Ofsted Outstanding at its most recent inspection. The school has a strong community identity and a noticeably settled, confident feel in its pupils.
Admissions are faith-prioritised: CofE baptised children attending church regularly take priority (category 1), followed by other Christian denominations (category 2), then siblings of current pupils, then proximity. In practice, secular families living close to the school are regularly admitted — the last-distance-offered figure typically falls between 350 and 500 metres depending on the year. But this varies, and families relying on proximity alone should treat entry as competitive rather than guaranteed.
New End Primary School — Streatley Place, NW3 1EP
A smaller community school with two-form entry (around 55 places per year) on a quiet street behind Flask Walk. Ofsted Good. Strong arts and music programme; the school benefits from enthusiastic parental involvement and a relatively intimate size. Catchment is tight — typically 300 to 400 metres — and has been shrinking in recent years as the area grows more desirable. Families living within that radius can apply with reasonable confidence; those further out should have backup options.
Fitzjohn\'s Primary School — Fitzjohn\'s Avenue, NW3 6PF
A larger three-form entry school (approximately 90 places per year) serving the south side of Hampstead. Ofsted Good, with particular strengths in arts, music and outdoor education. The school draws from a wider geographic area than the village schools — the last-distance-offered figure has historically been around 500 to 700 metres — which makes it slightly more accessible for families on the fringes of NW3. Christ Church CofE Primary School — Hampstead Square, NW3 1AB
A faith school with strong academic results and a warm community reputation. Priority is given to regular worshippers at Christ Church Hampstead and affiliated churches. The non-faith allocation is small and competitive. If you are not a regular churchgoer, be realistic about your chances — and note that "regular" attendance is assessed by the vicar and typically means at least monthly attendance for at least a year prior to application.
Primrose Hill Primary School — Princess Road, NW1 8JL
Technically in Primrose Hill rather than Hampstead, but within the NW3 admissions ecosystem and worth knowing for families at the southern end of the area. Ofsted Outstanding. Highly regarded for its inclusive ethos and strong arts programme. Oversubscribed; catchment is tight.

State secondary admissions in Camden operate on a similar timeline: applications open in September, deadline in late October, offers in March. For families moving to Hampstead, the main secondary options fall into three categories: comprehensive, faith, and academy.
UCL Academy — Adelaide Road, NW3 3AQ
The main state secondary serving Hampstead, sponsored by University College London and opened in 2012. Mixed comprehensive with a strong STEM focus and close institutional links with UCL — students have access to the university's facilities, mentors, and sixth-form pathways. Consistently Good or Outstanding Ofsted. Admission is by proximity; the school is significantly oversubscribed and the last-distance-offered figure has been as low as 800 metres in competitive years. Families within one kilometre of the school should consider themselves in the catchment; those further out should have contingency plans.
Parliament Hill School — Highgate Road, NW5 1RL

Bus and Northern line connections from Hampstead village make the journey manageable. An all-boys comprehensive immediately adjacent to Parliament Hill School. Strong results particularly in sciences. Similar transport links from Hampstead. Ofsted Good. A reliable option for families in the NW3/NW5 overlap area.
La Sainte Union Catholic School — Highgate Road, NW5 1RP
An all-girls Catholic comprehensive with strong academic results and a nurturing pastoral reputation. Priority is given to practicing Catholic families; the school assesses faith through the standard Supplementary Information Form, which requires a priest\'s reference. Also within reach via Highgate Road bus routes.
Acland Burghley School — Burghley Road, NW5 1UJ
A mixed comprehensive in Tufnell Park, slightly further from the village centre but within Camden\'s secondary network. Strong arts and creative subjects. Good Ofsted. A useful contingency option for families who do not secure places at their first-choice schools.
Independent Schools
North London has one of the highest concentrations of independent schools in the country, and several of the most prominent are within walking distance of Hampstead village. The standard caveats apply: all are selective, all are heavily oversubscribed, and all require early registration.
University College School (UCS) — Frognal, NW3 6XH
One of the leading independent day schools in the country. UCS operates a junior school (ages 4–11, called UCS Junior Branch on Holly Hill) and a senior school (ages 11–18, Frognal). Strong record of preparation for 13+ entry to leading independent senior schools — Eton, Winchester, Westminster, UCS. The school\'s 13+ leavers list is the most reliable indicator of its standing. Channing School — The Bank, Highgate, N6 5HF
An independent girls\' school in Highgate with a strong academic record and a noticeably warm pastoral culture. Junior school (ages 4–11) and senior school (ages 11–18) on adjacent sites. North Bridge House Schools
North Bridge House operates several campuses across NW3 and NW1, covering nursery through to sixth form. Devonshire House Preparatory School — Arkwright Road, NW3 6AE
A co-educational prep school for children aged 2½ to 13, well-regarded for its inclusive and nurturing approach. Less intensely academic in focus than the Hall or UCS Junior Branch, but with strong results at 11+ and 13+ nonetheless. Sixth Form and Post-16 Options
Families with children approaching sixth form have several strong options without leaving the NW3 area. UCS and South Hampstead High School both have large sixth forms with strong A-level and IB results. Hampstead School in Westbere Road, the local comprehensive sixth form, offers A-levels and BTECs and has improved its results significantly in recent years. Camden Sixth Form College (now part of the Camden Learning network) offers a wide range of A-levels and vocational qualifications and draws students from across the borough.
For the IB specifically, UCS offers the International Baccalaureate alongside A-levels. Families returning from international postings, or planning moves abroad, often prioritise this.
The Admissions Process: Practical Advice
The single most important piece of advice for families new to London school admissions is this: the timelines are earlier and the competition is more intense than in most other parts of the country. The following applies specifically to Hampstead and Camden.
State primary admissions run through the Camden admissions portal. Applications open in November and close in mid-January for September entry. You must apply to Camden even if your preferred school is technically in a neighbouring borough. List up to six preferences in genuine priority order. The coordinated offer comes in mid-April.

A Note on Realistic Expectations
Hampstead is an area where parental anxiety about schools runs high, and it is worth introducing some perspective. The state schools in NW3 are, by national standards, genuinely excellent — Ofsted Outstanding and Good ratings, strong SATs and GCSE results, stable teaching staff. Families who move to Hampstead and do not secure an independent school place, or who miss the catchment of their preferred state school, are not consigning their children to poor outcomes.
