Hampstead Heath's swimming ponds are a London institution like no other. Three separate bathing ponds β€” the Men's, the Ladies', and the Mixed β€” have been open to the public for over 150 years, and on a warm summer's day, swimming here ranks among the best free experiences the city offers.

The Three Ponds

The Men's Pond (open year-round) sits in a secluded hollow north of the Lido, accessible from the path near the Model Boating Pond. The water is cool and dark β€” filtered naturally by the clay and plants of the Heath β€” and the ambiance is entirely its own: herons nesting overhead, dragonflies skimming the surface, and an atmosphere of unhurried calm.

The Ladies' Pond, tucked away near Millfield Lane, is one of the few places in London that feels genuinely remote. Surrounded by willows and managed to strict ecological standards, it opens year-round and maintains a loyal community of regular swimmers, many of whom swim daily through even the coldest months.

The Mixed Bathing Pond, close to Parliament Hill, is the most accessible of the three and the liveliest in summer. It opens from late May through September and attracts swimmers of all ages and abilities.

What to Expect

All three ponds are lifeguarded during opening hours. Water temperature varies significantly by season β€” in summer it reaches 20–22Β°C, while winter swimmers (a dedicated and enthusiastic community) face temperatures as low as 3–4Β°C. Outdoor water temperatures are posted at the ponds and on the City of London Corporation website.

You swim in natural, unheated, unchlorinated water. There are no lanes, no turns, and no lap counters β€” just open water, fresh air and the particular freedom of wild swimming. First-timers are often surprised how quickly they become regulars.

Practical Information

Entry costs a small fee in summer (free for City of London residents with proof of address). Changing facilities are basic but functional. Bring a towel, flip-flops for the changing area, and a warm layer for afterwards. Goggles are recommended β€” the water is clear but has natural tannins that can sting.

Dogs are not permitted in the bathing ponds, though they can swim in other Heath ponds. The Lido on Parliament Hill is a separate, heated pool open year-round if you prefer lanes and chlorine.

Wild Swimming Community

The Heath ponds have fostered one of London's most distinctive communities. Winter swimming groups meet daily at the Ladies' and Men's ponds β€” friendly, inclusive and welcoming to newcomers who ask politely. If you're interested in year-round cold water swimming, this is one of the best places in the country to start.

The ponds are reached most easily from Hampstead or Gospel Oak stations. On summer weekends, arrive early β€” queues form by mid-morning in good weather, and the atmosphere before 9am, with mist on the water and birdsong in the trees, is worth setting the alarm for.
